River Riders Kayaking

Getting ready to depart from the accessible kayak launch

River Riders is an accessible and inclusive kayaking program providing instructional and recreational opportunities in Southern Maryland. River Riders offers kayaking at its summer camps, as well as kayak outings and events for organizations for people with disabilities, and for scouting and veterans groups.  All camp sessions and lessons are taught by ACA-certified instructors.

Greenwell has a wheelchair-accessible floating kayak and canoe launch, open to the public during regular park hours (sunrise to sunset). River Riders is in session from April through October.

Kayak Lessons
Lessons are offered to teens and adults age 16 and older. Recreational kayaking lessons cover paddling techniques, safety information, non-skirted wet exits, proper body posture and stroke improvement, and much more.

All lessons include use of kayaks, personal flotation devices, and all other necessary equipment, as well as time for practice and paddling fun. When all participants feel comfortable, short field trips may be added.

Greenwell also offers lessons to large groups; minimum 12 people per lesson. Cost is $20 per person. Contact Us to set up your group event.

Greenwell’s River Riders Kayaking program is made possible in part thanks to the financial support of individuals, organizations and businesses including grants from the St. Mary’s County Commissioners and the Southern Maryland Heritage Area Consortium through the Maryland Heritage Areas program.
